Can It Be Fixed: Ski Edition

Welcome to Can it Be Fixed, a blog series where we cover different outdoor recreational activities, the gear we use for them, and whether or not those pieces of gear can be/are worth fixing. We want to say right here right now that in a perfect world, we could repair everything and never have to re-consume that item. This may work for some articles of clothing or other items around your home, but when it comes to gear, it gets tricky. Today we're covering ski gear. As you'll find for many of these items, there isn't one straight answer, but we hope it helps debunk when to repair and when to replace. Let's Get into it!

Skis

If your skis have withstood damage in the form of a core shot or general scraping on the base, lucky for you it can be repaired by bringing it to a shop (or doing it yourself if you're skilled like that). However, if the skis are delaminating, have a side wall crack, or edge rip, it's time to think of something else to use them for. These kinds of damages challenge the integrity of the ski and won't be the most fun out on the snow. Also, if buying used and the skis have been mounted more than two times, chances are they won't be able to be mounted a third time.

Boots

It may surprise you, but almost all the components on your boots can be replaced or repaired! BOA Sytems, liners, ratchet straps, and (usually) power straps are all pieces that you can have a shop work on or do yourself by ordering the right tools! But, if the plastic shell is cracked or damaged, there's really no fixing it. *Fun Fact: Did you know different colored plastics on your boots are more susceptible to damage in extreme weather? Black plastics, when exposed to extreme temps, can break easier than other colors due to the color black's sun-absorbing properties!*

Poles

Pole baskets can always be replaced easily. Poles themselves might be able to withstand a glue or tape job, but really if they're busted, it'd be worth it to snag a new pair.

Helmets

If you lose any of the warm fleece on the inside of your ski helmet, manufacturers might be able to send you a replacement. But usually, if there's been any damage to a helmet, you're better off replacing it.

Brakes

The right ski shop can repair the brakes on your skis as long as they're at least 10mm above the waist!

Beacons

If your beacon is not working, please use another one. Plain and simple. That said, at the end of every season, be sure to take the batteries out and make sure the battery area is dry, This will prevent any possibility of corrosion over the off-season months.

Goggles

Lenses can always be replaced (depending on the model). Just check the manufacturer's website!

Mounting

Shops can certainly fix up your mounting if something should happen to it.
We hope this has helped you realize how much of your gear can be repaired! Just because one piece breaks doesn't spell doom for your wallet. And, if it does need to be replaced, check Geartrade first for exceptional UnNew gear are even better prices! Have fun, stay safe, and we'll catch you out there!
