How to prep your gear
Follow these steps to make sure your gear is sellable
Step 1: Clean your Gear - Smelly and dirty gear can’t be sold!
Softgoods like shirts, jackets, and pants
- Give the items a careful inspection for any tears or stains, and when you wash, pay special attention to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Special treatments like Nikwax can be a great idea to give waterproof goods a nice refresh.
Footwear like running shoes, hiking boots, and climbing shoes
- Rinse the shoes and use a light brush to remove any dirt.
- If the insoles can be removed, give them a wash in soapy water and dry.
- Make sure to de-stink them—smelly items can't be sold, so make sure they come to us fresh! Antibacterial spray can help, and you can put baking powder inside while drying them.
Hiking and camping equipment like tents, sleeping bags, and pads
- Make sure all parts are in working order, and replace or fix anything that isn't.
- If needed, set up the tent to make sure you have everything (and to air it out). Brush off any dirt or sand.
- Don't forget to include stuff sacks.
Helmets for biking, climbing, and skiing/boarding
- After cleaning, inspect to make sure there aren't any cracks or substantial dents. We do not accept helmets over 5 years old. Make sure the date is visible on the helmet.
Winter hardgoods like skis, snowboards, boots, and bindings
- We do not accept alpine ski bindings over 5-7 years old. When bindings fail to pass DIN tests, the binding becomes non-indemnified and can't be mounted as they are no longer considered safe.
- Fix damage like scratches to your ski bases. (We can't accept items with catastrophic damage like blown edges, topsheet delamination, etc.)
- Buckle ski/board boots before shipping—and make sure they aren't smelly. (See tips under “Footwear” for de-smelling.)
Bikes and bike parts
- Make sure all bikes/bike parts are clean and in working order.
- For components, make sure all parts are sent
Paddle, wake, and surf
- Note, we aren't accepting boats/watercraft currently. (Shipping's a bugger.)
- We are accepting clean, fully functional wetsuits, drytops, life jackets, paddle clothing, water shoes, and accessories.

How much will I get paid?
How much will I get paid?
The amount you get paid depends on the selling price of your item. Our payment structure is tiered, meaning that the more your item sells for, the higher percentage you earn. This payout structure is designed to cover our costs (Inbound Shipping, Item processing and SKU building, Professional Item Photography, Warehousing, Marketing in all relevant channels, and Customer Service and Support) and provide you and prospective buyers with best in class service while netting you the highest possible price.
For example: If your item sells for $600, you’ll receive 70% of that price, which is $420, or If your item sells for $145, you'll receive 50% of that price, which is $72.50
In short, items that sell for less will earn you a smaller amount, while higher-priced items will earn you more. You can always view your payout details on your past items page.
How do you price my gear?
How do you price my gear?
Our goal is to help you get the most money for your gear as quickly as possible. Here's how we try to do that:
1. Assessment and Pricing: When we receive your gear, we assess its value based on its condition and retail price. We then suggest a price and send you an email with our recommendation.
Factors Influencing our price recommendation: Listing prices are determined by several factors, including the estimated retail price, brand, product age, product category, seasonality, and product condition. If we cannot find an exact estimated retail price, Geartrade will estimate it based on similar products or categories.
Items that sell best on Geartrade and net the highest returns are those in good and better condition from well-known outdoor brands that are seasonally relevant. High-demand categories include Skis, Snowboards, Backpacks, Tents, Outdoor Equipment, Jackets, and Outdoor Apparel. Seasonal gear, such as Winter Sports Equipment in the fall/winter or Camping gear in the spring/summer, also tend to sell quickly for higher value. Ensuring your gear is clean, functional, and competitively priced will help increase its chances of selling.
2. Price Adjustment: You have 48 hours to adjust the suggested price, up or down, if you wish.
3. Price Confirmation: Once you agree to a selling price, or after the 48 hour price adjustment period has passed, the item price it will be held for thirty days without any discounts or promotional offers. Your item will be included in all marketing channels (Google, Meta, etc.), and our new products feed to generate immediate visibility. Top items usually sell within this time period.
4. Post 30-Day Pricing: If your item doesn't sell within the thirty day price confirmation period, the item will enter into the Geartrade pricing algorithm. This algorithm considers current market conditions, product seasonality, and competitive factors to find the optimal selling price. It makes small incremental price changes over time and avoids large price drops in order to get you the highest return.
5. Promotional Efforts: After the thirty day price confirmation period we may use various promotional tactics to market and sell your gear, which may include additional discounts and promotions.
If you have any further questions, please contact us at gearheads@geartrade.com.
