Geartrade x Stio
At Geartrade, our entire heart and soul is about making outdoor recreation more environmentally sustainable—getting excellent gently-used and hardly-used gear into the hands of people who will enjoy it. That’s less gear in landfills and less gear being manufactured brand-new (with the accompanying carbon footprint) every time you need something. This focus on sustainability is one of the big reasons we’re drawn to a few like-minded brands who work hard to reduce their carbon footprint—brands like
Stio, who, like us, share a commitment to the environment.
It’s why we’re beyond stoked to feature many Stio goods on Geartrade these days. We not only help individuals buy and sell used gear on our site—we also often work with brands, like Stio, to save their product samples, returned items, and oversupply from wasting away on a warehouse shelf. And these days, you can find a lot of
Stio goodness on Geartrade.
If you’ll forgive the pun, Stio clothes are a perfect fit for Geartrade—not only do they place a big focus on their footprint, but they also design and develop every item from their home base in Jackson, Wyoming. So the clothes, from ski pants to flannel button-downs, are exactly built for the kinds of things mountain-loving people do here around the West. No odd or futuristic-looking designs from some far-flung megacorporate office that’s trying to predict the next global trend. Just things that look nice, now, for mountain folks like us.
Stio’s massive sustainability initiative: walking that walk
In recent years, Stio has taken a massive stand committing to spare the planet the impact of irresponsible (yet typical) clothing manufacturing.
The company has, like Geartrade, become
Climate Neutral Certified, which means they completely offset their carbon footprint to make a net zero climate impact. This is huge—they’ve made a big effort to reduce their waste and energy use, but anything they can’t eliminate, they offset by investing in renewable energy projects in wind and solar around the world.
They’ve also set ambitious goals to build garments from responsibly sourced “preferred materials” like organic cotton rather than conventional cotton, which trashes the environment with excessive water use and reliance on chemicals and synthetic fertilizers. They’re boosting their use of recycled polyester and nylon, and have ensured that all of their down is responsibly sourced from humanely treated birds (unlike typical down, which can involve horrific treatment of live birds).
Stio keeps upping the ante each year in its preferred materials goals, aiming for 75% by 2025. And, even more impressively, they’re working toward B Corporation certification—a certification that will hold them responsible to continually do more and more to enrich the planet and fellow humans through their business.
Stio does good things, but they also make good stuff
Stio must know that all their commitment to sustainability doesn’t make as big an impact if people don’t dig their product—so they throw themselves into making fun yet highly functional clothing for the outdoors and for around-town too.
Think lightweight, breathable pants that work just as well for summer mountaineering as they work for a bike ride to get pizza. A button-down puffy jacket that looks Western with a cool twist. A flannel plaid shirt that’s fuzzy on the inside too for extra warmth and has pockets, because pockets. A baller waterproof shell jacket for skiing the rowdiest storm days without getting soggy.
It’s the kind of stuff we like to wear, ourselves.
