Tis The Season for Layering With Geartrade!

Layering could pretty much be its own cold weather sport. Depending on how long you’ll be out for and how much you intend to move while outside, layering becomes a fine art. Up here in the mountains, we’re already starting to see temps dip and snow up high, so it’s as good a time as ever to start talking about base layers. Today we’ll be breaking down the classic layering system to refresh your memory before the cold starts creeping in!

The Base Layer

Let’s start by saying there are two kinds of base layers to consider: wool and synthetic. And at Geartrade, we carry both. Wool is a fantastic, natural option that functions pretty similar to the way it would work on a sheep. However, if you’re allergic to lanolin (an oil found on most wool), synthetic fibers will work just as well for temperature regulation. These base layers are typically thinner articles of clothing that will sit closest to your skin to retain warmth and wick moisture.

The Mid Layer

Next on the docket is your mid-layer . The mid layer is thicker than the base layer and is typically some sort of sweater. This piece of clothing allows for the warmth emitted from your body to stay contained. The mid layer should fit comfortably over your base layer and allow you to move freely during your chosen activity.

The Outer Layers

Coming up after the mid layer is your insulated layer. This most often takes the form of a down or synthetic puffer jacket/vest (depending on the season and your own heat regulation). This layer does exactly what the name suggests: insulates your body. This is an important one to have within reach as it is a life saver when not moving. Last but not least is your hard shell. This will be the final layer depending on weather conditions. The hardshell will keep you dry and also prevent the wind from cutting through the warmth shell you’ve just cocooned yourself in. This layer may not always be necessary depending on the climate you live in, but as we adventure further into winter, it becomes a must. You can find a huge variety of layering options for the whole family on our site for this coming season. Remember, proper layers are the key to enjoying long hours in the cold, so don't miss out. Have fun, bundle up, and we’ll see you out there!
