Let's Talk: Boxing Day
Maybe you celebrate it, maybe you've never heard of it, but around the world, Boxing Day is a big deal! As it quickly approaches, let's talk about it and why we care about it at Geartrade.
History
Boxing Day was originally started in England during the reign of Queen Victoria. At this time, the church would collect money from patrons throughout the year and place it in small boxes to distribute to the poor the day after Christmas.
Nowadays, however, Boxing Day has become a wonderful day of giving after a major day of receiving. Not to say we can't give to others any time of the year, but after a string of holidays where many receive in excess, the day or a few days after is the perfect time!
How We Relate
You might be wondering how this connects to Geartrade. Well, if you've been with us for long enough, you know we sell perfectly good., used gear that would otherwise go to waste in a landfill or somebody's closet. What you might also know is that we have an award-winning consignment program.
Our program is really twofold. We want to do by the planet by keeping all this gear in use, but we also want to get
you outside.
Did you know roughly
84% of donated clothing ends up in the landfill? Donations feel great and they get what we no longer need off our plates, but if more than 3/4th of it is being thrown into the landfill anyway, what's the point?
This doesn't even account for the amount of gear that also gets put into donation centers only to be tossed.
What We Can Do Together
Selling your gear through Geartrade ensures that it is actually put to use, not just sitting in a garbage pile somewhere. Your gear is in the hands of seasoned outdoor pros who can market, photograph, and price your gear to a network of other like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.
And what happens if your item doesn't sell? Your items can certainly be sent back to you, or go to one of our partnered charities. We work with shops that repurpose old scraps, give directly to those in need in the SLC area, and teach children how to ski/climb with unsold gear.
Boxing Day isn't traditionally celebrated in America, but that doesn't mean we can't make our own traditions for the day. If you've been recreating outdoors long enough, you've probably accumulated more gear than you'd like to admit; we're in the same boat! The holidays don't help with the accumulation, either, because no doubt you had
some piece of outdoor gear on your list of nice-to-haves or wants. And really, the older gear is missing out on all the fun it was (literally) built for just hanging around in the corner of your garage, attic, or gear closet.
We know Gear can be sentimental, but when you're ready to part with it, do yourself, your gear, the planet, and others a favor by passing it on at Geartrade. You can learn more about our program

Have fun, enjoy the last of this year, and we'll catch you outside!
