PFAS FREE BY 2025: WHAT, WHY, & WHERE GEARTRADE FITS IN

In the outdoor world, you've probably heard the word "PFAS" (PFCS, PFOS, and PFOAs) floating around, and not for great reasons. PFAS are forever chemicals used in many daily products. They are a group of thousands of man-made chemicals that are sought after during textile production due to their stain-proofing and water-resistant powers. You might have also heard this term about non-stick pans which have traditionally carried the chemicals to create the namesake kitchen appliance. But PFAS are under fire, and for good reason. Not only do they harm the environment, but they also harm us when we use them. California recently banned the distribution of food products and wrappers that contain PFAS, and next on the list, textiles. This ban will go into effect on January 1, 2025. So, how does this tie in? Well, the main culprit for PFAS use in textiles is the outdoor industry. Think of all the water-resistant or waterproof items companies pump out to keep us dry on rainy adventures. Many notable outdoor brands are scrambling to meet the compliances by the end of the year, not really because they want to...but they have to. Which, while disappointing for how it's happening, is better than nothing. Luckily, there are a few tried and true brands that have been committing themselves to being PFAS-free long before the use went so heavily under fire. And the best part? We've been partnering with them for the past few years! Yes, there are ways to shop UnNew products from great brands that are trying to do better for you and our planet. PFAS Free brands on Geartrade:

  3. Fjallraven (100% PFAS free since 2015!)
