The Layering Game

The Layering Game

Finola McDonald |

Whether winter in your neck of the woods is starting to fade or going strong, the layering game is one we continue to play. If the temps are rising, we're nearly certain you haven't broken through the morning or evening chill quite yet, and if winter is pushing on strong, well, consider this a refresher. Layering has to be the key to having fun in the colder months. Because all can be going well but as soon as your hands and feet get cold, it's all over. We don't blame you; it sucks. You're allowed to make a big deal about it....but only if you haven't read this post! Once you have, it's all on you my friend. So let's review winter layers for the middle and end of the season.

Middle of Winter Layers

For those of us still in a true winter, your layers for any extended amount of time spent outdoors should go as follows (with the idea that you are checking the weather reports and adjusting layers to your individual needs):
  1. Base Layers (Synthetic or Merino Wool) and socks (again, synthetic or merino)
  2. Mid Layers (to retain warmth)
  3. Shell Jacket (to keep dry and/or prevent wind chill)
  4. Hats, Liner gloves (if it is really chilly), Mittens/Gloves

Transitional Layers

These layers will look a little different than the ones previously listed. For transitional temps, we want the option to be able to shed pieces at a moment's notice and similarly, put them back on. You can start with baselayers if you'd like, but the three key items to have are:
  1. The Midlayer - even better if it is a zip-up item for extra versatility
  2. A Vest - perhaps the most underrated insulator, will keep your core extra toasty
  3. The Shell Jacket - tell the rain and wind to take a hike. This is key to staying dry.
Of course, depending on activity levels and the temperature outside, more items can be added. A cozy beanie and some light gloves are easy items to store in your pack and can make a huge difference in the mornings and evenings during this time.
Whatever you're getting up to, no matter the weather, have fun, be safe, and we'll catch ya next time!
