At Geartrade, we've most recently added an exciting service to our lineup. For all DPS skis that come through the Revive program, we'll be refurbishing them with a Phantom Glide Base Treatment.
But the Phantom Glide Base isn't a wax-like you typically receive at another shop. The treatment is well, a treatment. And it's meant to last for the life of the ski/snowboard. What's so different about it compared to wax then, you might ask? Let's Take a look.
Unlike traditional wax, Phantom Glide is a permanent treatment designed to last the life of your ski or snowboard. How?
The polymers used in Phantom are smaller than regular wax, thus, allowing it to penetrate and disperse more effectively into the base of your board or ski. Once the molecules have traveled, UV light is used to bond the treatment to the base. This can be done with specific UV lighting or simply by placing the treated skis outdoors in the sunlight.
The treatment not only yields a higher performance glide but saves you money throughout the season and is easier on the environment.
Because this treatment only needs to be applied once, you'll save the time and cash you'd otherwise (1.) spend getting the items waxed in a shop, or (2.) buying and waxing your gear yourself. The treatment is PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) free. (You can read more about these chemicals hereif you're interested.)
The issue with traditional wax is that it needs to be constantly reapplied throughout the season. It wears off in the snow after use and once that snow melts, the residue from that wax moves with the water runoff and lands in streams or is reabsorbed into the land.
We don't know about you but we like PFAS to stay out of our water systems, and we're excited that Phantom has solved the issue.
Finally, increased glide helps with control and predictability on different kinds of snow. It should be mentioned here that you can apply traditional wax over the top of the Phantom treatment if you need something temperature-specific for competitive activity; it also works great with skins for backcountry exploration.
More answers to frequently asked questions you may have can be found here. This service will be available for those sending in their items for consignment, as a walk-in service, and as an integral step in how we partake in the DPS Revie program.
We hope you're excited! Stay tuned to be the first to hear about more snow services we have to come this season!
